Local context
Little Bears PreSchool in Memphis, Tennessee is a longtime education and learning option with deep roots in community and care. Founded in 1987 by Cindy Cromwell, Little Bears began with a simple goal: to create a place where children feel loved while learning, and where parents can go to work with peace of mind knowing their child is cared for in a warm, “as if Grandma were watching” way. From the start, the school emphasized extending learning beyond the classroom so young minds can explore and grow. Inspired by Cindy’s love of nature—she was raised on a farm nearby—Little Bears is tied to a legacy of bringing the outdoor world into children’s experiences, supported by the purchase of a large track of land. Over the past 25 years, Little Bears has grown from a small remodeled farmhouse into five buildings designed to serve each age group, while keeping the same heart for children and learning at its core. Many families in Memphis and beyond include parents who attended Little Bears themselves, with some of the same loving staff members still part of the preschool today. Graduates often stay connected and reflect on how early experiences helped them go on to meaningful careers—including teachers, nurses, firefighters, lawyers, police officers, doctors—and even a drummer in a national band. For families seeking a preschool with a strong history, a caring culture, and a community that remembers, Little Bears offers a welcoming start for the next generation.
